What does it mean to be bilingual? It means to know, speak, read, and understand 2 languages... and by default, their cultures. Is this your case in your own family? Are you considering passing on both languages to your children? If you are, well done! I couldn't be more proud!
In my own personal experience, growing up as a bilingual was a bit difficult and one main reason was because I felt divided into 2 lives and 2 worlds. I was two people in one body. I always felt it was hard to fit into either of those 2 worlds, but at the same time, I felt I belonged perfectly well. How contradictory! However, once I got older, I understood the beauty of it: I am both worlds. I carry both worlds and both languages, and I carry them proudly. They make me the person I am today. I understand the immense differences between them and respect them, and I understand their similarities and respect those as well. This has allowed me to be more open minded and accepting of two different kinds of ways.
Living now in a bilingual family of my own - husband and two kids - I understand the importance of knowing two (and more) languages and passing them on to our children. We are trying our best to maintain our Spanish, now that English is becoming the stronger language since we came to live here in the USA. I am working hard to preserve my native tongue in our daughters. I want them to have the best opportunities in life, and I know that learning and knowing 2 languages will benefit them greatly. Even though they will be growing up possibly feeling the way I did when younger, they will eventually come to terms with it... like I did. And who knows.... perhaps they will end up working in languages as well... like I am!
If you can relate to my story (or not, it doesn't matter) and feel strongly about preserving 2 or more languages at home, you have come to the right place. My BabyLingua works with both, English and Spanish, and you will learn all the methods, techniques, and resources that we have to offer to help your children learn both. If Spanish is not in your family, don't worry. You will learn it all in English first and then you would apply it in your own language.
Are you wondering when you should start with the second language? The answer is simple: at the same time you start with the first. My BabyLingua will coach you how.
"One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way."
